Everybody plans the install. Almost nobody plans January
Holiday lighting conversations happen in October and November and stop at the install date. That is understandable. But the season ends, and then there is a second job nobody scheduled. The people who asked the question up front are the ones not on a ladder in the cold.Which is a shame, because January is where the difference between companies actually shows. Anybody can hang lights in November. The question is whether anyone comes back. That question is worth asking before you book, not after the season ends.
What a January ladder day actually looks like
The takedown is the unpleasant half. The weather is colder. The motivation is gone. And at the end of it you are holding several tangled strands. Then the strands get boxed and shoved somewhere, and something in there stops working before you see it again.
How it should work instead
Takedown belongs in the original agreement. At the end of the season the crew comes back and removes the display. The lights get labeled and stored in their facility, so they come back out ready. You never handle any of it.
Why storage is not a small detail
Three things come out of somebody else storing it. Space is reclaimed. Condition holds, which is why so many strands die between seasons. Labeling means the display repeats accurately.
The permanent alternative removes the question
There is a version of this where January stops being a thing at all. Permanent lighting has no January. It is a bigger first step, and it is not right for everybody. But if the takedown conversation is what is bothering you, it is a fair question to raise.

Year two is a phone call
